Athena's Gem, Inc. is a registered non profit organization
founded in 2005. We are dedicated first to the renovation of the historic
Gem Theatre to be used in our community as a multi use auditorium capable of
supporting not only cinema but live theatrical and musical
productions. The other compartment of the 1901 Jacob Betz Building was
originally a saloon and while we are still conceptualizing the revitalization of
that space, we hope to return it to its original configuration. This space
will definitely function as the lobby for the theatre but might also serve as a
community hall and youth activity center.
A survey of 35 local youth conducted in February, 2002 by
Oregon Downtown Development Association found that over half were interested in
the development of a wider ranger of youth activities and rated the renovation
of the "movie theatre" as a highly desirable project.
